The city of Jacksonville is known for its military history. Most people in the state know about the Air Force base in Jacksonville, but they probably don’t know about the famous Civil War battle that took place in the area.
The Battle of Reed’s Bridge took place in Jacksonville in 1863 and was one of Arkansas’ last stands before the Union Army captured Little Rock. Relive the history at this landmark by visiting the grounds to take a tour of the battlefield that includes an 1860-era replica homestead and a walking trail with narrative historical markers highlighting the battle along the way. As you explore, feel free to enjoy a picnic or take pictures of the historic scenery.
If you are a history buff, be sure to travel five minutes down the road to visit the Jacksonville Museum of Military History to see the Battle of Reed’s Bridge exhibit. In this exhibit, you’ll see actual weapons used in the battle, including guns, bullets, shrapnel, cannonballs and more. New artifacts are still being discovered, so you never know what you’ll find.
While you are there, don’t forget to check out the other exhibits highlighting U.S. military history. The museum covers all major wars and includes a theater area, interactive displays, memorabilia and a gift shop. Each display will help you better understand how the conflicts affected not only the world, but the local area as well.
The museum’s goal is to educate the public and foster an appreciation for the sacrifices made by local men and women defending our country, both on and off the battlefield. Just as important is their mission to preserve artifacts for future generations’ enjoyment and enlightenment.
